Explosive maximum efforts such as jumping and sprinting, but also running with tired muscles such as during the final phase of a marathon, cause muscle damage. As a result of this damage, muscle pain often occurs for several days after exercise. The repair of this muscle damage is accompanied by inflammation and oxidative stress, but the processes are also important for long-term training adaptation. Hence, excessive use of anti-inflammatories and/or antioxidants can inhibit normal progression in training and performance.
However, during an intensive competition period with a short succession of competitions, rapid recovery is more important than long-term training adaptation. Under these circumstances, intake of anti-inflammatories and/or antioxidants can promote rapid succession of peak performance.
Sour cherries are naturally rich in flavonoids, mainly anthocyanins, which have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, intake of sour cherry juice can reduce the level of inflammation and oxidative stress in the muscles after intense exercise, thus also alleviating muscle pain. It has also been shown that during a rapid succession of maximal explosive efforts such as sprinting and jumping, the best performance level is recovered more quickly after ingesting tart cherry juice. A dose of flavonoids equivalent to ~300 ml of pure juice twice a day is usually sufficient to achieve this faster recovery.
