Iron plays a very important role in the body in oxygen transport in the blood, as well as in muscle building and metabolism. Iron is therefore crucial for optimal sports performance. We find the mineral in our daily diet, mainly in meat, fish, potatoes, grains and legumes. It is important to distinguish between haem iron from animal products and non-haem iron from plant products. While iron from meat or fish, for example, can be absorbed relatively well by the body, the absorption of iron from vegetable products is very limited.
An iron deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the population, and especially among athletes. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for iron is set at 8-11 mg for men and 15-18 mg for women. Because vegetarians only take the poorly absorbable non-haem iron from vegetable products, the RDA for them is considerably higher (15 mg for men, 33 mg for women). Due to an increased iron requirement and/or poor iron absorption, (young) female athletes, endurance runners and vegetarians in particular do not achieve this RDA. Athletes who regularly use anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) are also more likely to suffer from an iron deficiency due to minor bleeding in the intestines. As a result, these athletes together form the most important risk group for iron deficiency. Regular monitoring of the iron status via a blood test is therefore crucial in every training process.
A severe iron deficiency results in anemia, a situation that is not only detrimental to sports performance but also to overall health. However, there is much scientific evidence that a much smaller iron deficiency can lead to a significant reduction in performance, especially in endurance athletes. For example, athletes may feel tired more quickly with a small deficit and thus train less intensively or for a longer period of time. Science has clearly shown that athletes can benefit from an iron supplement in such a case. Various studies show, for example, that increased iron intake in people with iron deficiency can improve endurance performance, maximum work output and running efficiency.
6d IRON FERROCHEL® can help athletes who suffer from iron deficiency to improve iron status and stimulate sports performance. The supplement contains iron in the form of iron bisglycinate: this is a vegan form of iron that is still of very high quality. Various scientific studies show that the FERROCHEL® formula is exceptionally well absorbed by the body; much better than other commonly used supplements containing iron salts. In addition, there is scientific evidence that this specific FERROCHEL® form of iron prevents the absorption of other nutrients from being (unintentionally) slowed down. In addition, the risk of side effects is kept to a minimum due to the high-quality ingredients.
In addition, 6d IRON FERROCHEL® contains vitamins B6, folate and B12. Iron, together with these vitamins, ensures optimal formation of red blood cells, which stimulates oxygen transport in the blood. In addition, a lack of one of these vitamins can also lead to anemia, making it advisable to combine an iron supplement with the intake of these vitamins. Finally, the added vitamin C promotes the absorption of iron in the body.
In short, 6d IRON FERROCHEL® is an ideal supplement for athletes who regularly suffer from an iron deficiency, such as (young) female athletes, endurance athletes and vegetarians.
