The science behind Unusual Recovery

Polyphenols play the leading role in this product. We focus on tart cherry and look for the best ingredient: not an ordinary concentrate, but an advanced standardisation that guarantees a high polyphenol content (1500 mg), in particular a high concentration of anthocyanins (1250 mg), complemented by quercetin and phenolic acids. Few name anthocyanins explicitly as key players in recovery; only we state that 1250 mg of anthocyanins markedly improve post-exercise recovery.

Carbohydrates are an essential part of recovery in endurance sport. We opted for a 1:1 ratio between the carbohydrate sources, matched to the intestinal transporters GLUT5, SGLT1 and SGLT2. GLUT5 is a highly intelligent transport mechanism that carries fructose to the liver and metabolises it there in various ways; for SGLT1 and SGLT2 we worked with different glycaemic indices and chose, among others, amylopectin from waxy maize starch, which speeds up digestion thanks to its high molecular weight.

Probiotics are gaining importance in the world of sport. During hard efforts the gut undergoes changes and inflammation, which slows or hinders the absorption of nutrients. We focus on two strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and salivarius, which have been shown to reduce exercise-induced inflammation.
